Handwara Martial Arts Champions: Two young athletes from Zachaldara Handwara, Raja Azlaan Khan and Raja Mahir Khan, have been recognized for their outstanding performance in the 5th Junior Pencak Silat World Championship and 20th Senior Pencak Silat Championships. These events took place in Abu Dhabi from December 18 to 22, 2024, where both brothers brought glory to India through their remarkable medal-winning efforts.

Felicitation on Republic Day

On Republic Day in Handwara, Tehsildar Syed Basarat Rasool honored the brothers for their international achievements. Later, in a ceremony at Kupwara Police Lines, DC Kupwara, DDC Chairman Irfan Sultan Panditpuri, and IAS officer Ayushi Sudhan also felicitated them. The local community and officials praised the duo’s dedication and perseverance in reaching this prestigious level of success.

The brothers proudly wore India’s colors in Abu Dhabi, with Azlaan competing in the Open 1 category at the junior level and securing a silver medal, and Mahir taking part in the Open 2 category at the senior level, earning a bronze medal. Their achievements highlight the potential of youth in the region and bring attention to the growing prominence of Pencak Silat, a martial art originating from Southeast Asia.

Schools and Community Support

Azlaan currently studies at Tyndale Biscoe School in Srinagar, while Mahir is enrolled at Kashmir Harvard. Both institutions have played an essential role in shaping their athletic journey, offering support and encouragement. The brothers also credit their mentors, Iqbal Sir and Irfan Aziz Botta, as well as Adil Manzoor of Handwara, for providing expert guidance and motivation throughout their training.
