Gujarat University: In a significant academic reform, Gujarat University (GU) has announced the launch of 20 undergraduate programmes that will allow students to earn dual degrees.
Key Highlights of the Initiative
- Dual Degree Option: Students pursuing BA, BCom, BSc, BBA, or BCA can opt for a second UG degree under the new programme, in line with UGC guidelines.
- Launch Timeline: The initiative will roll out from the 2025-2026 academic session.
- Approval: The decision was taken by GU’s 16-member Executive Council in a meeting on Thursday.

Founded in Ahmedabad, GU is Gujarat’s oldest and largest public university. It currently has 15,000 students across 67 departments and 325 affiliated colleges, offering 152 undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate programmes.

Vice Chancellor Neerja Arun Gupta highlighted that the move aims to:
- Save time for students and reduce administrative complexities.
- Enhance financial and academic autonomy.
- Retain students amidst rising competition from foreign universities offering similar programmes.

Gujarat University: In 2024, two Australian universities established campuses in GIFT City, offering fintech and cybersecurity courses. A British university is also set to open its campus this year, increasing global competition in higher education.
